Gengigel contains hyaluronan (a natural substance found in the connective tissues of the body). It controls inflammation and stimulates the production of new healthy tissue. To protect tooth enamel the pH is 6.5

In trials at the University of Rostock in Germany, scientists found it can boost tissue healing by up to a half, increase blood supply and reduce inflammation. Hyaluronan, the active agent in Gengigel, has been used for years by doctors to boost regrowth of connective tissue throughout the body.

Applying hyaluronan as a mouth rinse or gel strengthens cell walls and gets cells to stick together. The tissue grows back faster, while being able to resist re-infection.

The Gel is quite viscous and quite easy to apply to specific areas of ulceration or trauma.  The Mouth Rinse is supplied with a handy measuring cup and is ideal for broad application or reaching those hard to get at places.

Gengigel is mentioned often on the message board - indeed Richard Thomas (MD of Oraldent, the manufacturer) offered free samples to visitors of the site last summer. Gengigel has been undergoing a major double-blind study in the treatment of mouth ulcers at Newcastle Dental Hospital, the results will be published in a couple of months. Personally I have found it excellent for preventing ulceration to cuts or abrasions in the mouth.
